Club History
In the early 1980’s, a small group of
bird owners hoped to learn more about their pets. They started a club
in the back of a pet shop. With the aid of a local avian vet, Dr. Cate
Adsit and the space provided by Ed Duncan, owner of Eddie’s Aquarium,
the Captial District Pet Bird Club was formed. The club started with
about ten people and grew over the years. The shop became too small and
they moved the meetings to a local high school.
Now close to twenty years later, the Capital District Pet Bird Club
still has regular meetings. The location is different but the main goal
of the club is still the same—to educate bird owners. Our meetings are
now held at various community libraries. We have toys for sale, raffles
and a free door prize.
At each meeting you will hear a speaker talking on topics such as
rescue, winterizing your birds, diet, behavior, caging and of course
safety. We have also had lectures about softbilled birds and
hummingbirds! We are looking to the future and hope to invite a
gentleman who speaks to animals and an holistic vet to talk at our
meetings.
We have many avain vets in the club; they conduct lectures and also
attend the meetings to held members who have questions that need to be
addressed. We also have long-time bird owners, breeders and pet shop
owners, who are happy to help with problems. We also have our own
lending library within the club.
For meeting dates please see the "events" page of this website. Note:
We do not allow birds at these meetings due to health and safety issues.
